The American Literary Translators Association

2023 marks the 25th year for the National Translation Award, and the 9th year to award separate prizes in poetry and prose. The NTA is awarded annually in poetry and in prose to literary translators who have made an outstanding contribution to literature in English by masterfully recreating the artistic force of a book of consummate quality. The award-winning translator for 2023 will receive a $4,000 cash prize.

This year’s judges for prose are Natascha Bruce, Shelley Frisch, Jason Grunebaum, Sawad Hussain, and Lytton Smith. Follow this link to see what the judges had to say about each of the shortlisted titles.

The Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize, which was inaugurated in 2009, recognizes the importance of Asian translation for international literature and promotes the translation of Asian works into English. The award-winning translator for 2023 will receive a $6,000 cash prize.

We are delighted to announce that the 2024 Emerging Translator Mentorship Program submission portals are open! The ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program is designed to establish and facilitate a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is one year. Since its inception, the program has supported 54 translators working from 18 languages. 

Applications are open until November 30, 2023 at 11:59pm PT. 

ALTA is excited to announce the 2023 ALTA Travel Fellows! Each year, between four and six $1,000 Travel Fellowships are awarded to emerging (unpublished or minimally published) translators to help them pay for hotel and travel expenses to the annual ALTA conference. This year’s winners were selected by judges Lizzie Davis, Michelle Gil-Montero, and Canaan Morse. ALTA will celebrate this year’s Travel Fellows with a reading at ALTA’s annual conference, ALTA46: The Place of Translation, ALTA’s first fully in-person conference since 2019.
