2025 National Translation Awards

The National Translation Award (NTA) is awarded annually in poetry and in prose to literary translators who have made an outstanding contribution to literature in English by masterfully recreating the artistic force of a book of consummate quality. Established in 1998, the NTA is the only prize for a work of literary translation into English to include an evaluation of the source language text. 2015 was the first year in which the NTA was awarded separately in poetry and prose. The winners of the National Translation Awards in Poetry and Prose receive a $4,000 prize each.

Weaving together voices from past and present that cross social and cultural boundaries, Chimera by Phoebe Giannisi, in the translation of Brian Sneeden, offers an epic, panoramic view on life through intimate, detailed observations of the goat-herding practices of the Vlachs in Northern Greece and Southern Balkans. The accounts, crisscrossing an array of prose and verse, comment on the relationships between human beings and animals and between creatures and their surrounding environments, inspiring questions about what it means to live. Giannisi guides the reader on a journey from birth to death that is rich, profound, humorous, and heart-rending.
