The Greenfield Review Press published its first book, a collection of inmate poems smuggled out of Soledad Prison, in 1971. Otis Laboratory Press is a fully functioning letterpress studio with four Vandercook proof presses and over 200 fonts. Established in 1984 by Sheila de Bretteville as part of the Communication Arts Department, the LabPress has a rich history of small edition book publishing, introducing generations of students to the origins of typography and the notion of the book as a visual communications medium. Conceived as a laboratory for aesthetic exploration and a place for practical production, the LabPress is an integral part of the graphic design curriculum. Founded in 1998 by Rebecca Wolff, Fence is a biannual journal of poetry, fiction, art, and criticism that has a mission to redefine the terms of accessibility by publishing challenging writing distinguished by idiosyncrasy and intelligence rather than by allegiance with camps, schools, or cliques. It is Fence‘s mission to encourage writing that might otherwise have difficulty being recognized because it doesn’t answer to either the mainstream or to recognizable modes of experimentation. Fence is long-term committed to publishing from the outside and the inside of established communities of writing, seeking always to interrogate, collaborate with, and bedevil other systems that bring new writing to light. Sampsonia Way is an online magazine sponsored by City of Asylum/Pittsburgh celebrating literary free expression and supporting persecuted writers worldwide. The magazine’s key staff includes exiled writers living on Sampsonia Way, a street in Pittsburgh that spans cultures and languages, which was conceived with their advice from within their own experience of exile and repression. Just as the physical Sampsonia Way provides a home for exiled writers in a revitalized community, SampsoniaWay.org aims to be a virtual home that mobilizes a widely dispersed international public to protect writers and writing by engaging writers and non-writers in a virtual community and by becoming a source for research and dialogue.

The University of Missouri Press prefers a letter inquiring about manuscript submission. Generally, we request a brief summary of the proposed project, as well as some descriptive data on the author. Burning Deck began in 1961 as a little magazine. In 1961, poets were supposed to be in opposing camps, often inelegantly—and inaccurately—labeled 'academics' and 'beats'. The two most widely noted anthologies of the time (Donald Allen's The New American Poetry and what was known as "The Hall-Pack-Simpson"), both representing the period 1945-1960, do not contain a single poet in common. Burning Deck Magazine disregarded this split and presented a spread of poets wide enough that occasionally an author complained of being published in such unprogrammatic compall. Though advertised as a 'quinterly', the magazine, after only four issues, gave way to a series of chapbooks and—later, in part with the help of NEA grants—books of poetry and occasionally of short fiction. In 1984, Burning Deck merged with allART: Contemporary Arts Center, becoming the literature program of this non-profit organization. In 1992, we added a translation series (Série d'Ecriture: current French writing in English translation), in 1994 a second one (Dichten=: current German-language writing in English translation).

Ox and Pigeon is a digital publisher founded by three friends in September 2010 over a round pisco sours in Lima, Peru. After a few years of sleep Mr. Cogito has returned to life. He had lived for more than twenty years. His model was the great Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert. Now we are looking once again for poems that have strength of image, sound, concept and feeling -- poems that also relate to the social realities of the poet's time and place.

The first issue of Hanging Loose magazine was published in 1966. The name was inspired by the format -- mimeographed loose pages in a cover envelope -- and that, in turn, was inspired by a very low budget. But the format was also meant to get across a point of view: that poetry is for now, not for the Ages. If you liked a poem, you could pin it to the wall. If you didn’t like a poem, you could use it as a napkin.

Oberlin College Press is a nonprofit literary press based at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. The overall goal of the press, staffed mostly by poets who volunteer their time and student interns who wish to learn about all aspects of publishing, is to produce a periodical of high standing and notable integrity, along with books of superlative quality, with respect to design as well as literary excellence and originality. Unicorn Press was founded in 1966 in Santa Barbara, CA, and in 1972, it moved to Greensboro, NC. By then, it was the sole responsibility of Al Brilliant, one of the three founders. Al was fortunate to have the cooperation and partnership of his spouse, the poet, novelist, and translator, Teo Savory (1907- 1989), who became Editor of the press while Al handled production and administration. During its first 46 years, Al has had the comradeship of forty young men and women who have joined in full-time, for two years or longer.

The overall mission of our press is encapsulated in the name “Sarabande”--that is, “stylistic sophistication with a wild underside.”
