Winner: 2025 Italian Prose in Translation Award

Verdigris
By Michele Mari
Translated from Italian by Brian Robert Moore
And Other Stories

This is what the judges had to say about this year’s winner:

Set in the 1960s in Northern Italy, Michele Mari’s novel Verdigris portrays the intricate and grotesque world of a boy, a hired man the boy calls “his monster”, and their riveting quest to reconstruct a shared past via painstakingly retrieved memories. Rather than simply rendering the monster’s voice in standard English, Moore has crafted a dialect based primarily on Irish to match the author’s original “willful pastiche” of regional dialects in Italian. Through deft wordplay and a mastery of syntax and dialogue, his translation transmits each discovery the duo unearths with an apparent lightness that belies the formidable precision of Mari’s Gothic prose.

About the winner

Brian Robert Moore is the translator of Lalla Romano’s In Farthest Seas and A Silence Shared, Michele Mari’s Verdigris and You, Bleeding Childhood, and the work of other acclaimed Italian authors. For his translations of Michele Mari, he received the 2025 PEN Translation Prize and the O. Henry Prize, while his translation of Romano’s A Silence Shared was runner-up for the 2024 John Florio Prize. His translation of Walter Siti’s Paradise Overload, for which he received an NEA Fellowship, is forthcoming from Archipelago Books.
