An exciting Literary Translation Short Course will be held for the third year at City University London from 11th to 15th July 2016.  It offers the opportunity to translate texts across the literary genres into English, working with leading professional translators. The languages we offer this year are:

• Arabic – Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp
• Catalan – Peter Bush
• Chinese – Nicky Harman
• French – Ros Schwartz, Trista Selous and Louise Rogers Lalaurie
• German – Ruth Urbom
• Italian – Shaun Whiteside
• Japanese – Angus Turvill
• Polish – Antonia Lloyd-Jones
• Portuguese –  Margaret Jull Costa
• Russian – Robert Chandler
• Spanish – Nick Caistor and Rosalind Harvey

We are also pleased to reveal the evening programme for this course.  Opening the week will be French tutors Louise Rogers and Trista Selous with a Translation Slam chaired by our tutor-director Ros Schwartz.  We are also excited to host an evening sponsored by the European Commission Representation in the UK with Stephen Turkington, Language Officer, giving a seminar on Tuesday about the multilingual opportunities and careers available within the EU. This will be followed by a drinks-and-eats reception, courtesy of the ECR.  On Wednesday, Sasha Dugdale, editor of Modern Poetry in Translation magazine and Russian literary translator, will give a keynote Lecture on Poetry, Birdsong and Translation.  This year’s publishers’ panel will include presentations by Nick Sheerin (Profile Books), Emily Boyce (Gallic Books), Mark Richards (John Murray) and Sophie Lewis (And Other Stories) and will be held on Thursday evening.  All evening seminars are voluntary and open to the public.

New this year! Students will be able to pick a free choice afternoon workshop from: Poetry with George Szirtes, Theatre with Catherine Boyle, Translating Children’s Literature with Helen Wang and Crime Writing with Don Bartlett.

Bookings are now open and places will be allocated on a strict “first come, first serve” basis. Full fee is £490. Bursaries are available.  Bursary application deadline is 31 May 2016.
