Asymptote is an exciting new international journal dedicated to literary translation and bringing together in one place the best in contemporary writing. We are interested in encounters between languages and the consequences of these encounters. Though a translation may never fully replicate the original in effect (thus our name, “asymptote”: the dotted line on a graph that a mathematical function may tend towards but never reach), it is in itself an act of creation.

Mayapple Press is a highly-selective small press established in 1978 by poet and editor Judith Kerman. We focus on literature not often celebrated by either the mainstream or the avant-garde. This includes poetry which is both challenging and accessible; women’s writing; the rustbelt/rural culture that stretches from the Hudson Valley to the Great Lakes; the recent immigrant experience; poetry in translation; science fiction poetry. We also welcome poetry anthologies, short fiction and science fiction poetry. Publications are in trade paperback formats (30-120 pages). In general, we publish only authors with prior publications with reputable presses or literary magazines. We do not publish books which have been previously self-published, although parts of a longer poetry collection may have appeared in privately-printed chapbooks.

Founded in 1917, Atlantic Monthly Press is one of two hardcover imprints of Grove Atlantic. As a book publishing imprint borne out of the venerable Atlantic Monthly magazine, AMP won numerous Pulitzer Prizes and National Book Awards and included the bestselling titles Mutiny on the Bounty; Goodbye, Mr. Chips; Ship of Fools; Fire in the Lake; The Soul of a New Machine; and Blue Highways. Twisted Spoon Press is an independent publisher based in Prague. Founded in 1992, it is focused on translating into English a variety of writing from Central & Eastern Europe and making it available to a global readership. In May 1949 Monthly Review began publication in New York City, as cold war hysteria gathered force in the United States. The first issue featured the lead article Why Socialism? by Albert Einstein. From the first Monthly Review spoke for socialism and against U.S. imperialism, and is still doing so today. From the first Monthly Review was independent of all political organization, and is still so today. The McCarthy era inquisition targeted Monthly Review's original editors Paul Sweezy and Leo Huberman, who fought back successfully. In the subsequent global upsurge against capitalism, imperialism and the commodification of life (in shorthand “1968”) Monthly Review played a global role. A generation of activists received no small part of their education as subscribers to the magazine and readers of Monthly Review Press books. In the intervening years of counter-revolution, Monthly Review has kept a steady viewpoint. That point of view is the heartfelt attempt to frame the issues of the day with one set of interests foremost in mind: those of the great majority of humankind, the propertyless.

A Midsummer Night’s Press was founded in New Haven, CT in 1991. Hand-printing on a letterpress, it published broadsides of poems by Nancy Willard, Joe Haldeman, and Jane Yolen, among others, in signed, limited editions of 126 copies, numbered 1-100 and lettered A-Z. One of the broadsides–“Will” by Jane Yolen–won a Rhysling Award. In 1993, the publisher moved to New York and the press went on hiatus until 2007, when it began publishing perfect-bound, commercially-printed volumes.
