Meet the 2020 ALTA Travel Fellowships Judges!

Meet the 2020 Mentees: May Huang

The ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program is designed to facilitate and establish a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is nine months. The emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in this timeframe, and they will only be advised on that particular project.

Announcing the Winner of the 2019 National Translation Award in Poetry: Pan Tadeusz

November 8, 2019—The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) is pleased to announce the winner of the 2019 National Translation Award (NTA) in Poetry! 2019 marks the twenty-first year for the NTA, and the fifth year to award separate prizes in poetry and prose. The NTA, which is administered by ALTA, is the only national award for translated fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction that includes a rigorous examination of both the source text and its relation to the finished English work.

Announcing the Winner of the 2019 Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize: Autobiography of Death

November 8, 2019—The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) is delighted to announce the winner for the 2019 Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize. This prize, which was inaugurated in 2009, recognizes the importance of Asian translation for international literature and promotes the translation of Asian works into English. This year’s judges are Chenxin Jiang, Vivek Narayanan, and Hai-Dang Phan.

Announcing the Winner of the 2019 Italian Prose in Translation Award: The Eight Mountains

November 8, 2019—The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) is pleased to announce the winner of the 2019 Italian Prose in Translation Award (IPTA Starting in 2015, the Italian Prose in Translation Award (IPTA) recognizes the importance of contemporary Italian prose (fiction and literary non-fiction) and promotes the translation of Italian works into English. This prize is awarded annually to a translator of a recent work of Italian prose (fiction or literary non-fiction).

Information on the ALTA Conference Bookfair

Each year ALTA welcomes hundreds of translators, editors, booksellers, and readers to a celebration of literature in translation at our annual conference. For many decades, the bookfair has been part of this gathering, showcasing books translated from around the world by ALTA members.

We have recently received public and private expressions of frustration with the management of the bookfair, specifically around the lack of availability of certain titles.

The NTA Countdown to ALTA42: What’s Left of the Night

Join us as we count down to ALTA42: Sight and Sound with the National Translation Award in Poetry and Prose long- and shortlisted titles! We will be featuring the titles in alphabetical order alongside blurbs penned by our judges for the National Translation Awards in Poetry and Prose. This year’s prose judges are Bonnie Huie, Charlotte Mandell, and Jeffrey Zuckerman.
