Membership and Development Coordinator, ALTA (Part Time)
Position Summary
The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) seeks motivated and organized applicants for the position of Membership and Development Coordinator.
The Membership and Development Coordinator will be responsible for: communicating with current and interested members, coordinating fundraising campaigns, and developing and maintaining relationships with donors. The candidate will also play a key role in the redesign of ALTA’s website, with an eye to serving member needs.
The candidate must have a strong organizational sense with a sharp eye for detail, and be able to prioritize and manage a range of responsibilities while working collaboratively with a small team.
Successful applicants will also have a demonstrable understanding of the field of literary translation, and a strong interest in international literature.
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to develop and build their skills in support of literary translation and translators, and to support the growth of a small non-profit literary arts organization.

The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) is a nonprofit arts membership association that provides resources, community, and professional affiliation to its 800 members. ALTA’s mission is to support the work of literary translators, advance the art of literary translation, and serve translators, and the students, teachers, publishers, and readers of literature in translation.
ALTA fulfills this mission in a number of ways: hosting our annual conference, the largest gathering in North America dedicated exclusively to literary translation; offering awards that recognize excellence in literary translation; and providing emerging translators with support through mentorships and fellowships.

Duties & Responsibilities
Membership
- developing and maintaining relationships with donors
- managing fundraising campaigns, including direct appeals, in coordination with the Communications and Awards Manager
- ensuring timely donor acknowledgements
- establishing and implementing data-entry procedures and best practices to ensure data consistency and quality
- reviewing database maintenance and staying abreast of changes to database system
- overseeing reporting on development, membership, and related needs
- managing a schedule of annual fundraising activities that balances with other organizational goals and events
- grantwriting support
Development
- maintaining member communications and cultivation efforts
- managing questions and queries from current and potential members
- contributing to the design and oversight of related membership benefits (including members-only listservs, publications, events, etc.)
- expanding membership, with a focus on fostering greater diversity, equity, and inclusion at ALTA
- strengthening relationships with current members
Website Redesign
- collecting feedback from ALTA stakeholders regarding desired functionalities and priorities for ALTA’s new website, especially in terms of staff usability and member services
- working with the Website Task Force to develop and circulate an RFP to secure a successful bid
- liaising between ALTA and the successful bidder during the website development and implementation process
Related Skills
Strategic thinking, timeline-orientation, clear communication, strong writing and organizational skills, detail oriented, budgeting and spreadsheet knowledge, ability to work collaboratively on a small team, knowledge of CRM database systems, and a proactive customer service attitude including responsive and personal rapport with members.
Preferred Qualifications for the Position
- Commitment to and passion for ALTA’s mission and goals.
- Proficiency in data collection and management; experience working with Neon CRM, or other CRM software (customer relationship management software) and/or large databases a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office with a strong emphasis on Excel skills.
- Proficiency in G Suite applications, especially Google Drive, Google Forms, Google Calendar, and Google Groups.
- Experience with website development and/or website redesign.
Hours, Salary, Location
This is a 0.5 FTE (20 hours / week) position; salary is in the range of $20,000 per year. The selected candidate will report to ALTA’s Executive Director, and will work independently and in coordination with other ALTA staff.
Preference may be given to candidates able to work in-person in ALTA’s office at the University of Arizona in Tucson. However, this role may begin as a remote position, as ALTA staff is currently working remotely due to the pandemic.
