The Italian Prose in Translation Award (IPTA), which was inaugurated in 2015, recognizes the importance of contemporary Italian prose (fiction and literary non-fiction) and promotes the translation of Italian works into English. This $5,000 prize will be awarded annually to a translator of a recent work of Italian prose. The winning translators and books are featured at the annual ALTA conference. Submissions are open until April 15.

Allison Grimaldi-Donahue is a writer and translator whose work has appeared in The Literary Review, Words Without Borders, The Brooklyn Rail, BOMB, The Fanzine, 3:AM Magazine and other places. Her chapbook Body to Mineral was published by Publication Studio Vancouver in 2016. She is co-author of a forthcoming book from Delere Press (May 2019) which is a poetic response to Maurice Blanchot’s Awaiting Oblivion. She was a fellow at the Bread Loaf Translators’ Conference, an NEA Fellow in translation at the Vermont Studio Center and an artist-in-residence at Mass MoCA. She is a translations editor at Anomaly and edits a special translation issue with Queen Mob’s Teahouse. She has taught as a visiting translator at Middlebury College and Smith College and as an art writer at Cornell University Rome. She currently teaches creative writing and critical theory at The American University of Rome and John Cabot University.
Zakiya Hanafi is the author of The Monster in the Machine: Magic, Medicine and the Marvelous in the Time of the Scientific Revolution (2000, Duke UP). She is the Affiliate Assistant Professor in Human-Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, since 2014, and formerly Assistant Professor of Romance Languages (1991-1996) at the UW and Adjunct Professor in Cultural Mediation and Technical Translation at the University of Venice, Italy (2003-2009). Since 2009, she has been devoted to translating arts and humanities prose from Italian and French to English. Her latest book translations include Displacing Caravaggio: Art, Media and Humanitarian Culture by Francesco Zucconi (2018, Palgrave MacMillan), A Philosophy for Europe by Roberto Esposito (2018, Polity), and Theory of the Novel by Guido Mazzoni (2017, Harvard UP).

Alta L. Price runs a publishing consultancy specialized in literature and nonfiction texts on art, architecture, design, and culture. A recipient of the Gutekunst Prize, she translates from Italian and German into English. Her latest book translations include Martin Mosebach’s The 21 (Plough, 2019) and Dana Grigorcea’s An Instinctive Feeling of Innocence (Seagull, 2019). Her work has appeared on BBC Radio 4, 3 Quarks Daily, Maharam Stories, Trafika Europe, Words Without Borders, and elsewhere. She is a member of ALTA, ATA, AWP, the PEN Translation Committee, the Third Coast Translators Collective, and Cedilla & Co.
