Literary Translators Fellowships awarded by Vermont Studio Center and American Literary Translators Association
August 5, 2025—Vermont Studio Center (VSC) and the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) announce the recipients of the 2026 ALTA Fellowships at VSC. Through this partnership, two fully funded two-week residencies are offered to current members of ALTA. Sarah Audsley, VSC Writing Program Director stated, “This partnership has allowed us to continue the tradition of welcoming and supporting translators and their projects.”
The ALTA Fellowships at VSC provides one fellowship for a BIPOC translator who identifies as queer, woman, non-binary, and/or LGBTQ+. The second fellowship is offered to a mid-career translator, defined as a translator who has published three or more full-length translations.
The 2026 ALTA Fellowship at VSC recipients are Mira Rosenthal and Suneela Mubayi. Rosenthal is an American poet and translator of Polish-language writers such as Tomasz Różycki, Małgorzata Lebda, and Krystyna Dąbrowska. Her work has been nominated twice for the Griffin Poetry Prize as well as for the Derek Walcott Prize, the National Translation Award, and the Oxford Weidenfeld Translation Prize. Mubayi is a mixed-race, genderqueer translator based between New York and Oslo, Norway. She completed a PhD in Arabic literature from NYU, and has translated close to 100 essays, poems, and fiction pieces between Arabic, English, and Urdu for publications such as Banipal, Words Without Borders, Modern Poetry in Translation, Jadaliyya and New England Review.
“Opportunities like this help translators advance their own work and the art of literary translation,” said Katrine Øgaard Jensen, Executive Director of ALTA. “We are thrilled to partner with VSC and provide well-deserved recognition and support to two valued ALTA members.”
