Write the World 2023: Partnering for Success Translators & Agents in the Publishing Industry

What is the role of literary agents? Should translators seek out partnerships with literary agents? If so, what is the best way for translators and agents to connect and work together? In this session, a translator, agent, and publisher will discuss the various ways in which an agent can help translators navigate the business side of publishing, such as pitching projects, negotiating contracts, and marketing translations, along with building relationships with publishers.

Moderator

Joseph Brockway is a poet, translator, and Spanish professor. He holds a PhD in Literary Studies and Translation. He translated Island Mythical Coffer by Spanish surrealist Eugenio Fernández Granell. His translations of poems from Las mujeres no hablan así by Nemir Matos-Cintrón have appeared in various print and online publications.

Panelists

Elianna Kan joined Regal Hoffmann in 2017. Her experience includes editing literature in translation as Senior Editor of The American Reader. She has consulted for Penguin Random House Mexico and written about the Latin American publishing market. Additionally, she has taught creative writing and literary translation at Columbia and Middlebury. | elianna@rhaliterary.com Heather Cleary is an award-winning translator whose work has been recognized by English PEN, the National Book Foundation, the BTBA, among others. A member of the Cedilla & Co. translation collective, she has served as a judge for several national translation prizes and teaches at Sarah Lawrence College. She authored The Translator’s Visibility: Scenes from Contemporary Latin American Fiction. Ethan Nosowsky is Editorial Director at Graywolf Press. He has worked on books in translation by authors including Nona Fernández, Han Yujoo, Yuri Herrera, Lina Meruane, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, and Irene Solà. He lives in Oakland, California.
