Welcome to the New Website!
We at ALTA are excited to bring you our all-new website (opens in new tab)!
This new site is the product of months of tireless work alongside our developers and designers at Cold Rice (opens in new tab) and New Information (opens in new tab), a Brooklyn-based design studio whose past clients include the Museum of Modern Art, the Queens Museum, and Monacelli Press.
“Our collaboration with ALTA resulted in a complete reimagining of their brand identity and website, designed to reflect the vibrancy, inclusivity, and literary essence of the organization. The new identity highlights a dynamic interplay between the full name—American Literary Translators Association—and the acronym, ALTA, with alternating typographic alignments that create a visual syncopation, echoing the inherent beauty and rhythm of language,” said Dave Yun of New Info.
There’s a lot there that we hope will feel familiar—and a lot that is new, exciting, and useful. At the core of it all is the same ALTA spirit, defined by those who make up our community.
“We want ALTA’s website to be a hub for our community just as much as the conference is,” said Interim Executive Director Sean Gasper Bye. “Our new site will be a place for folks to gather year-round, to learn what their colleagues are up to and tap into our vital online resources. We’re excited to make all this and more available to our community and I can’t wait for people to start exploring the new site.”
“The new website and identity reflect several key priorities that were identified throughout our process—from responses to our initial survey, to meetings with staff and board and other members, peers, and stakeholders,” said Membership & Digital Projects Coordinator Sophia Marisa Lucas, who has been at the heart of the website relaunch. “These include: conveying ALTA’s character; bridging the organization’s past and future; upgrading functionality and clarity; and creating a welcoming and accessible platform to share content and resources.”
Many of the website’s features have been refined and others are entirely new and will continue to grow and be updated over time. Here are some features you can now explore:
- The updated Translators Database allows ALTA members to seamlessly customize and share their profiles.
- A video library will make ALTA events accessible no matter where or when.
- The events calendar will make sure you never miss an ALTA event or initiative.
- A completely searchable database of all longlistees, shortlistees, and winners of ALTA’s translation awards offers readers of literature in translation a new way to find celebrated works by ALTA’s community.
“We hope people come to the site and find what they need more easily than ever, but also that they stay a while; we want it to be a place where people stumble upon new ways to deepen their practice and also become more engaged with literary translation and the work that ALTA does to advance it,” said Sophia Marisa Lucas.
