The University of Pennsylvania Press exists to publish meritorious works that advance scholarly research and educational objectives. The Press was originally incorporated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on 26 March 1890, and the imprint of the University of Pennsylvania Press first appeared on publications in the closing decade of the nineteenth century—among the earliest such imprints in America. Today the Press has an active backlist of roughly 1500 titles and an annual output of upwards of 120 new books and journal issues in a focused editorial program across the humanities and social sciences.

Exchanges began in 1989–90, as a project of the Iowa Translation Workshop when I was director. The first issue was cyclostyled, the title being copied from Ulalume González de León’s short story “Intercambios,” translated by Stephanie Lovelady, a student in the Workshop. All texts were presented bilingually. The idea was a simple one: to provide a focus, giving workshop members a sense of working towards publication. Iowa, with its unique combination of Creative Writing Program, Literary Translation Program, and International Writing Program, seemed the ideal location for such a project. We have been publishing letterpress books of poetry since 1982 (books by Gary Snyder, Denise Levertov, James Laughlin, Hayden Carruth, Donald Hall, John Haines, Pattiann Rogers, etc.). We live on an isolated island off the Washington coast in a log house we built ourselves. We have a C&P, a small Vandercook proof press, a little tabletop Adana, and a large flatbed Challenge. Besides the print shop (which occupies a third of the main floor of the house), we have a bookbindery complete with Challenge paper cutter, a floor model board shears, and two nipping presses. We’ve been off the grid for 29 years. What power we have comes from solar panels. Sally is the printer; Sam (who also served as the inaugural poet laureate of Washington) is the resident bookbinder.

Mayapple Press is a highly-selective small press established in 1978 by poet and editor Judith Kerman. We focus on literature not often celebrated by either the mainstream or the avant-garde. This includes poetry which is both challenging and accessible; women’s writing; the rustbelt/rural culture that stretches from the Hudson Valley to the Great Lakes; the recent immigrant experience; poetry in translation; science fiction poetry. In May 1949 Monthly Review began publication in New York City, as cold war hysteria gathered force in the United States. The first issue featured the lead article Why Socialism? by Albert Einstein. From the first Monthly Review spoke for socialism and against U.S. imperialism, and is still doing so today. From the first Monthly Review was independent of all political organization, and is still so today. The McCarthy era inquisition targeted Monthly Review's original editors Paul Sweezy and Leo Huberman, who fought back successfully. In the subsequent global upsurge against capitalism, imperialism and the commodification of life (in shorthand “1968”) Monthly Review played a global role. A generation of activists received no small part of their education as subscribers to the magazine and readers of Monthly Review Press books. In the intervening years of counter-revolution, Monthly Review has kept a steady viewpoint. That point of view is the heartfelt attempt to frame the issues of the day with one set of interests foremost in mind: those of the great majority of humankind, the propertyless.

Southern Humanities Review publishes fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Translations in all genres have also appeared in the journal. The journal recently established the Auburn Witness Poetry Prize Honoring Jake Adam York, poet and Auburn University alum. $1,000 and publication in SHR will be awarded annually to one poem of witness by an American poet.
